“To guarantee a happy marriage, marry a 9-year-old girl.” - Old Yemeni Proverb
Read about how a court trial changes history and culture forever!
Nujood Ali was a typical Yemeni girl. She went to school, played with her siblings as well as children her own age, and dreamed about seeing the sea. Then, mysteriously, her family was chased out of their village and was forced to move to the capital where her childhood would be abrupted. Her family desperate for money, Nujood was sold off for marriage to someone who was 3 times her age, who broke all of his promises. By age 10, she did the unspeakable: demand a divorce.
Through the non-chronological storytelling of the memoir, Nujood amplifies her powerful experience with hope and suspense. The speaker being only 10-years-old, the vocabulary isn’t too difficult, but the subject matter spoken of is.
If you liked The Kite Runner, I Am Malala, or have any interest about historical events around the world, you would like I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced. You can find it in Mrs. Krill or Mrs. Whitcher’s room.
